BOYS BASKETBALL

Class AA: 3-St. Raymond, 18-Archbishop Stepinac, 21-Cardinal Hayes, 24-Iona Prep. Class A: 13-Msgr. Farrell. Class B: 18-Salesian.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Class AA: 4-Ursuline, 10-Our Lady of Lourdes, 15-Albertus Magnus. Class A: 12-Moore Catholic.

HS All-State Runners Named

The New York State Sportswriters Association released its all-state cross country teams.

Here are the honorees from Catholic high schools in the archdiocese:

BOYS

Myles Hogan, Fordham Prep, Class A third team

Pedro Bravo, Iona Prep, Class A, fifth team

Quincy Flett, Xavier, Class A fifth team

Brendan Mulvany, Iona Prep, Class A honorable mention

Christopher Paxis, Msgr. Farrell, Class A honorable mention

GIRLS

Expo Added to Manhattan Meet

Iona Prep, Ursuline and Fordham Prep will be among the teams competing in Saturday’s Manhattan College Cross Country Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.

Some 10,000 runners from across the country will be participating in the high school meet. Dinner will follow with international treats from around the Bronx.

For the first time, Manhattan College has added an expo for the high school runners on the night before the event. U.S. Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano will deliver the keynote address and college coaches from around New York City will discuss what it takes to be a successful collegiate runner.

 

Citron Excels for Team USA

Sonia Citron of The Ursuline School helped Team USA win the 2019 International Basketball Federation’s (FIBA) U16 Americas Championship in Chile.

The rising junior at Ursuline earned all-tournament honors and received college athletic scholarships from Pac-12 powers Stanford and Oregon when she returned from Chile.

Athletes Earn All-State Honors

The New York State Sportswriters Association recognized Catholic high school girls basketball athletes from the archdiocese as all-state honorees on Tuesday.

The honorees are:

CLASS AA

Kateri Poole, Msgr. Scanlan, second team; Ava Learn, Our Lady of Lourdes, 6th team; Paulina Paris, Albertus Magnus, 8th team; Alexa Mustafaj, Ursuline, 12th team; Tanasha Mills, Albertus Magnus, 12th team; Kaylen Banwareesingh, Msgr. Scanlan, 13th team

CLASS A

Jada Rogers, Cardinal Spellman, 4th team; Catherine Finnerty, Msgr. McClancy, 6th team; Gianna Samuels, Notre Dame Academy, 10th team; Brittany Stenz, McClancy, 12th team; Lauren DeMartino, St. Joseph Hill, 13th team

Final State Basketball Polls

The New York State Sportswriters Association released its final high school state basketball polls for the 2018-2019 season.

Here is how schools in the archdiocese fared:

BOYS BASKETBALL

Class AA: 9-Stepinac, 10-Cardinal Hayes, 16-St. Raymond, 27-Mount St. Michael

Class A: 7-Msgr. Farrell, 13-Fordham Prep

Class B: 14-Regis

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Class AA: 7-Ursuline, 8-Msgr. Scanlan

Class A: 6-Cardinal Spellman, 13-Msgr. McClancy

Flynn Runs to State Crowns

Lily Flynn of The Ursuline School took first place in the 1,000-meter run at the state federation indoor track and field championships at Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex on Staten Island on Saturday.

Flynn had a time of 2 minutes, 50.91 seconds.

Flynn also anchored Ursuline’s 3,200-meter relay, which finished in a first-place time of 9:07.89. She was joined on the relay by Daphne Banino, Haley McLean and Sarah Flynn.
