Senior Bowl on Sunday

The 2021 Catholic High School Football League Senior Bowl is scheduled for Sunday at 1 p.m. at Mitchel Athletic Complex in Uniondale.

The Senior Bowl has the top seniors from the league in the archdiocese competing against the top seniors from Long Island.

Iona Prep Wins AAA Championship

Ajani Sheppard threw for three touchdowns, ran for two touchdowns and was named the Catholic High School Football League AAA Championship game’s offensive most valuable player after leading Iona Prep to a 49-15 victory over Msgr. Farrell at Mitchel Athletic Field in Uniondale on Saturday.

Sheppard completed 17 of 22 passes for 220 yards and ran for 75 yards on 10 carries for the Gaels, who will host St. Francis of Buffalo in the state Catholic high school championship game at noon Saturday.

Iona Prep, the state’s No. 1 Class AA team in the state sportswriters poll, will be playing for the program’s first Catholic high school state football title.

“Major accomplishment for the program/school,” Iona Prep coach Joe Spagnolo told Catholic New York/Catholic Sports Scene. “The boys are very excited to be playing for a state championship on Saturday.”

Justin Joly caught five passes for 73 yards and one touchdown, and had seven carries for 76 yards and a touchdown for Iona Prep. Michael Senatore, MIke Ryan and Colin O’Garro each scored a touchdown.

Defensively, Iona Prep stopped Msgr. Farrell’s running game and had three quarterback sacks. Zyian Moultrie-Goddard was named the game’s defensive most valuable player.

Banino Leads Runners

The Ursuline School’s Daphne Banino won the Varsity B girls race in a time of 14 minutes, 44.70 seconds on Van Cortlandt Park’s 2.5-mile course to lead Catholic school runners from the archdiocese at the Manhattan Cross Country Invitational in the Bronx.

Ursuline placed seventh with 205 points.

In the Varsity D girls race, Ava Gumb of St. Joseph Hill Academy was second in 15:45.30, leading her team to a seventh-place finish with 226 points.

In the Varsity A girls race, Lola Dinneen was fourth in 15:28.80 and Alyssia Brown placed ninth in 16:01.30, leading Notre Dame Academy to an 11th-place finish with 284 points.

In the Boys Eastern States Championship race, Fordham Prep’s Myles Hogan was fourth in 12:34.80 and his team placed ninth with 275 points.

In the Varsity C race, Dylan Doskocil’s ninth-place finish in 13:56.10 led St. Joseph by-the-Sea to an eighth-place finish with 220 points.

In the Varsity E race, Msgr. Farrell was third with 125 points, led by Anthony Zarrella’s 11th-place finish in 13:48.7.
