Jerome Signs with Warriors

Iona Prep graduate Ty Jerome is in camp with the Golden State Warriors after being waived by the Houston Rockets and signing with the defending NBA champions.

Jerome and the Warriors will be in preseason action at 8:30 p.m. Sunday night against the Los Angeles Lakers and Iona Prep graduate Matt Ryan.

Jerome, 25, was part of an eight-player trade between the Oklahoma City Thunder and Houston Rockets, who waived Jerome following the trade.

Jerome led the University of Virginia to the 2019 NCAA championship before being drafted 24th overall in the 2019 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers, who traded him to the Phoenix Suns.

The 6-foot-5 guard played in 31 games during his rookie season with the Suns, and has played a total of 112 games in his NBA career with the Suns and Thunder, averaging 7.1 points, 1.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists in 17.1 minutes per game.

Ryan in Lakers Camp

Iona Prep graduate Matt Ryan signed last week with the Los Angeles Lakers and is in camp with the NBA team that opens its preseason at home tonight against the Sacramento Kings.

Ryan joined the Boston Celtics in April 2022 and scored three points in five minutes during his NBA debut against the Memphis Grizzlies.

The 6-foot-7 forward was playing with the Maine Celtics of the NBA G League where he was averaging 19.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game in 27 games. 

The 25 year old attended Notre Dame, Vanderbilt and Chattanooga.

Manhertz Catches 1st Pass of 2022

Cardinal Spellman High School graduate Chris Manhertz caught his first pass of the season for the Jacksonville Jaguars in a 29-21 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Manhertz and the Jaguars will host the Houston Texans on Sunday at 1 p.m.

The 6-foot-6, 255 pound tight end signed a two-year, $7.25 million deal with the Jaguars in March 2021 and finished last season with six receptions for 71 yards and one touchdown in 17 games, 10 being starts.

For his career, the 30 year old has 18 catches for 202 yards and two touchdowns.

Manhertz played basketball at Canisius College in Buffalo and was offered a tryout by the Buffalo Bills following his collegiate career. After the Bills released him, he was on the practice squad for the New Orleans Saints in 2015 and was in uniform for three games in 2016 before being released.

The Carolina Panthers claimed him off waivers from the Saints and he played five seasons with the Panthers.

Koonce Assists Raiders Defense

Archbishop Stepinac High School graduate Malcolm Koonce finished with a solo tackle as the Las Vegas Raiders won its first game of the season with a 32-23 victory over the visiting Denver Broncos on Sunday.

It was the second consecutive week the second-year defensive end finished with a solo tackle for the Raiders, who will play Kansas City Chiefs in Kansas City on Sunday.

In 2021, Koonce played in five games and finished with three tackles, two being solo tackles, and two sacks.

The Raiders drafted Koonce out of the University of Buffalo in the third round with the 79th overall pick of the 2021 NFL Draft.

3 AAA Football Teams Still Unbeaten

And then there were three.

Archbishop Stepinac, Kellenberg and St. Anthony’s were all winners, improving to 3-0 in the AAA Catholic High School Football League. St. Anthony’s defeated defending Catholic high school state champ Iona Prep, 48-42, in New Rochelle.

Iona Prep (3-2 overall) meets rival Archbishop Stepinac (5-0 overall) in White Plains at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Catholic High School Football League’s featured game of the week.

Young Helps USA Win Presidents Cup

Fordham Prep graduate Cameron Young won his singles match in helping the United States win a ninth consecutive Presidents Cup with a 17.5-12.5 victory over the International team on Sunday at Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina.

In the 2021-2022 PGA Tour season, Young placed second in five tournaments in his rookie season and third in two more, including the PGA Championship. He earned over $6.5 million in his rookie season.

Young will be competing this weekend in the Sanderson Farms Championship at The Country Club of Jackson in Mississippi.


Case Finishes 2022 in Altoona

Iona Prep graduate Brad Case helped the Altoona Curve complete the second half of the 2022 season with a 38-30 record.

The Curve compete in the Eastern League and are the Class AA affiliate of the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Case finished the season with a 1-3 record and 3.92 earned average. In 62 innings, he gave up 59 hits and 22 walks. He struck out 58 hitters.

Case was a 17th-round pick of the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft.


LaSorsa Completes 2022 Season

Iona Prep graduate Joe LaSorsa and the Montgomery Biscuits reached the semifinals of the Southern League playoffs where it lost to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos.

The Biscuits are the Class AA affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Blue Wahoos are the Class AA affiliate of the Miami Marlins.

LaSorsa, 24, finished the season with a 7-3 record, 2.33 earned run average and eight saves. In 73 ⅓ innings, he struck out 87 hitters.

LaSorsa was an 18th-round pick of the Rays in the 2019 Major League Baseball Draft out of St. John’s University, and pitched for the Hudson Valley Renegades in Fishkill during the 2019 season.

Stepinac Graduate Koonce Finishes with First Tackle of 2022 for Raiders

St. Anthony’s Next for Iona Prep

There’s no doubt Iona Prep may have the toughest schedule in 2022.

And so far, the Gaels have done quite well to start the season with a 3-1 record.

Iona Prep, the defending Catholic high school state champion, now enters its most challenging portion of its Catholic High School Football League schedule with St. Anthony’s, Archbishop Stepinac and Kellenberg in the next three weeks. All four teams are 2-0 in league play.

Iona Prep is ranked first in the most recent Class AA poll compiled by the New York State Sportswriters Association. Stepinac is third, St. Anthony’s is fourth and Kellenberg is 18th.

On Saturday, the Gaels host a St. Anthony’s team, which is coming off an impressive victory over state-ranked Msgr. Farrell.
