All-State Football Players

Here is how Catholic high school football players on the all-state teams released by the New York State Sportswriters Association:

Class B

First team: Anthony Badaliacca, lineman, Cardinal Spellman. Third team: Ethan Ortiz, all-purpose back, Cardinal Spellman; Liam Mulholland, kicker, John F. Kennedy Catholic. Fourth team: Brendan Tierney, running back, John S. Burke. Fifth team: Ryan Manna, kicker, John S. Burke; Jaron Joseph, defensive back, Albertus Magnus.

NOTE: The Class AA and Class A all-state teams are being released next week.


Hayes, Moore Claim Titles

Cardinal Hayes captured its second Catholic High School Football League AAA Championship in four years with a 25-7 victory over two-time defending state champ Archbishop Stepinac at Mitchel Field in Uniondale.

Cardinal Hayes will play the Buffalo region champion for the Catholic high school state title on Nov. 23.

Moore Catholic won the AA-2 championship with a 28-6 win over St. Joseph by-the-Sea.

Kennedy Catholic Wins in OT

Clayton Proctor scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime as John F. Kennedy Catholic captured the Catholic High School Football League’s A Championship with a 39-33 victory over visiting Cardinal Spellman Nov. 10.

Liam Mulholland booted a 27-yard field goal at the end of regulation to force overtime.

Kennedy Volleyball Wins Crown

John F. Kennedy Catholic defeated Mary Louis Academy of Queens, 25-20, 20-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22 to capture the CHSAA Intersectional high school girls volleyball championship at Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx on Wednesday.

Julia Costa finished with 41 assists and six aces for Kennedy Catholic. Madison Troetti, Anna Cascapera and Grace Tompkins each contributed nine kills. Cascapera also had five blocks.

The Gaels improved to 22-0 overall and will play in this weekend’s state Catholic high school tournament in Queens.


Iona Prep, Archbishop Stepinac Preparing for Football Semifinals

Rivals Iona Prep and Archbishop Stepinac are a win from meeting for the CHSFL AAA championship.

Iona Prep, the top seed, hosts Cardinal Hayes in a semifinal at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The Gaels recorded a 58-41 win on Oct. 26 in the regular-season matchup.

Stepinac, the second seed, plays third seed Christ the King in White Plains at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The Crusaders cruised to a 45-7 victory in the regular-season matchup on Oct. 13.

On Sunday, top seed John F. Kennedy Catholic hosts second seed Cardinal Spellman  for the CHSFL A championship in a rematch of the 2018 title game won by Spellman.
