Updated State Basketball Polls

Here is how Catholic high schools from the archdiocese fared in this week’s state basketball polls from the New York State Sportswriters Association.


Class AA: 4-Archbishop Stepinac, 5-St. Raymond, 12-Cardinal Hayes. Class A: 29-Msgr. Farrell. Class B: 16-Salesian.


Class AA: 3-Ursuline, 11-Albertus Magnus, 23-Our Lady of Lourdes. CLASS A: 6-Moore Catholic.


Hayes Wins Intersectional

The Cardinal Hayes boys captured first place in the CHSAA Intersectional at Ocean Breeze on Staten Island.

Cardinal Hayes finished with 35 points, followed by Iona Prep with 27 points.

Cardinal Hayes won the 800-meter and 1,600 relays, and also received first-place finishes from Travis Williams in the 55, 6.49 seconds, and Tavon Williams in the 300, 34.21 seconds.

Iona Prep’s Pedro Bravo took first place in the 1,600, 4:21.07, and 3,200, 9:23.13.

Other winners from the archdiocese included Archbishop Stepinac’s Nazir Hibbert, high jump, 6-4; Msgr. Farrell’s Anthony Zopich, long jump, 22-5.5; Fordham Prep’s Miguel Negrete, pole vault, 14-0; and Mount St. Michael’s Anthony Wakefield Jr., shot put, 45-8.75.

The Notre Dame Academy girls placed fourth overall behind wins by Sierra Dinneen in the 1,000, 2:56.51, and 1,500, 4:47.58.

Brigid McCabe of Notre Dame of Manhattan was first in the 3,000, 10:21.20, and Msgr. Scanlan’s Hannah Gadpaille sprinted to victory in the 55, 7.35.
