Athletes Earn All-State Honors

The New York State Sportswriters Association recognized Catholic high school girls basketball athletes from the archdiocese as all-state honorees on Tuesday.

The honorees are:

3 Teams in State Girls Basketball Poll

Msgr. Scanlan, Cardinal Spellman and Aquinas are ranked in this week’s New York State Sportswriters Association girls basketball poll.

Msgr. Scanlan, which posted a 64-48 victory over John F. Kennedy Catholic on Wednesday, is ranked 14th in the Class AA poll. Cardinal Spellman is 10th in Class A and Aquinas ranks 20th in Class B.

Msgr. Scanlan, Cardinal Spellman and Aquinas are the only three CHSAA programs from the archdiocese in the state poll, which includes teams from around the state.

 

14 Girls Earn All State Honors

Fourteen Catholic high school girls basketball players from the archdiocese earned all-state honors from the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Stepinac boys, Aquinas Girls Playing for Federation Championships

The Archbishop Stepinac boys and the Aquinas girls advanced to their respective New York State Federation high school basketball championship games in Glens Falls with wins on Friday.

Stepinac (CHSAA champ) tipped Long Island Lutheran (NYSAIS champ), 76-72. Long Island Lutheran was ranked ninth in the USA Today national poll. Stepinac will meet PSAL champ South Shore, an 80-48 semifinal winner over NYSPHSAA champ Liverpool, at 8 p.m. Saturday for the championship.

Aquinas (CHSAA champs) defeated John Jay Campus (PSAL champs), 68-37, and will play Susquehanna Valley (NYSPHSAA champs) at noon Sunday.

Aquinas Wins State Championship

Aquinas High School in the Bronx won a second consecutive CHSAA B championship with a 69-43 victory over St. Dominic at Fordham University on March 11.

Kira Villegas scored 24 points to lead the Lady Bears (24-0). Lauren Malcolm and Ronella Kennedy had 18 and 17 points, respectively.

Aquinas will compete in the state federation tournament at Glens Falls on March 23-25.

Lourdes Girls Lead State Poll

Our Lady of Lourdes is ninth in this week’s New York State Class AA high school girls basketball poll compiled by the New York State Sportswriters Association.

Lourdes, located in the Town of Poughkeepsie, competes in the NYSPHSAA’s Section 1, which includes public and Catholic schools in the lower Hudson Valley. The Warriors are led by Maddy Siegrist (photo above with family), who is signed to play at Villanova University next season.

Five CHSAA schools from the archdiocese were recognized in the state poll.

In Class A, Msgr. Scanlan is second, followed by Cardinal Spellman at 13 and John F. Kennedy Catholic at 20.

In Class B, Aquinas and St. Vincent Ferrer are 13, and 24, respectively.
