Griffin Lifts Duke to Elite 8

Archbishop Stepinac High School graduate AJ Griffin finished with 11 points and seven rebounds to help second-seeded Duke defeat third seed Texas Tech, 78-73, in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division I men’s basketball tournament in San Francisco on Thursday night.

The Blue Devils used a 7-0 run to take a 73-68 lead with 1 minute, 30 seconds remaining. Griffin, who was 3 for 7 from three-point range, hit two free throws with 12 seconds remaining to give Duke a 77-73 lead.

Griffin injured his left ankle in his team’s second-round win over Michigan State on Sunday. He left the game in the second half, but never returned to the locker room for treatment. He played 37 minutes against Texas Tech.

Duke (31-6 overall) will play fourth seed Arkansas in the West Regional final, Elite Eight, on Saturday night.
