Our Lady of Lourdes High School will be going from Section 1 to Section 9 in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association for the 2022-2023 school year, school officials announced.
“After extensive research and deliberation with stakeholders it was agreed upon that the move from Section 1 to Section 9 was in the best interest of the school’s athletics program. There are many benefits that come along with the transition from Section I to Section IX including allowing us to compete against schools of comparable size,” said Lourdes Athletic Director Bill Kyle.
Section 9 includes schools from Dutchess, Sullivan, Ulster and Orange counties, including John S. Burke High School. Section 1 features schools from Dutchess, Westchester, Putnam and Rockland counties, including Albertus Magnus High School and The Ursuline School.
The move will cut travel time for Lourdes athletes and coaches. For the current school year, Beacon left Section 1 for Section 9, leaving Lourdes with no Section 1 opponents with similar enrollments in Dutchess County.
“The move to Section 9 will require less travel time for our student-athletes which will allow for their focus to be on both athletics and rigorous academics without experiencing added pressure in managing their time,” said Lourdes Principal, Meghan Vilardo.
