The New York Yankees just announced that Fordham Prep graduate Andrew Velazquez will be on the team’s 26-man roster for tonight’s American League wild-card game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park in Boston.
Velazquez, 27, was recalled from Scranton for the final two games of the regular season when infielders Luke Voit and D.J. LeMahieu were battling injuries and eventually placed on the injured list. LeMahieu was placed on the 10-day injured list and can return for the American League Championship Series if the Yankees advance to that round. Voit is done for the season.
The winner of tonight’s game will play the Tampa Bay Rays in the American League Division Series.
Velazquez is one of six infielders and one of 14 position players on tonight’s roster. Velazquez finished the regular season with a .224 batting average, one home run, six RBI, 11 runs scored and four stolen bases. He had two hits in his final 14 plate appearances with the Yankees this season.
The Yankees will have 12 pitchers available tonight including starter Gerrit Cole. Starting pitchers Jordan Montgomery and Corey Kluber are not on the roster for tonight’s game, but starter Nestor Cortes is on tonight’s roster and is available to pitch in relief.
