March Madness is Here

March Madness is hitting the archdiocese with a pair of doubleheader treats.

On Friday, basketball fans can see a pair of Archbishop Stepinac graduates.

Stepinac grad RJ Davis leads eighth seed North Carolina against Wisconsin on CBS at 7:10 p.m. This game will be followed on CBS by sixth seed San Diego State meeting 11th seed Syracuase and Stepinac grad Alan Griffin.

On Saturday, 15th seed Iona and first-year coach Rick Pitino will look to upset second seed Alabama on TBS at 4 p.m. This game will be followed on TBS by 15th seed Grand Canyon opposing second seed Iowa and Cardinal Hayes graduate Joe Toussaint.

If you are looking for some more basketball Saturday, No. 1 Gonzaga will play Norfolk State on TBS following the Iowa-Grand Canyon game. Gonzaga is undefeated and ranked first in the country. 

Norfolk State is coached by Robert Jones, a Queens native who played collegiately at SUNY New Paltz and previously coached at Bard College, SUNY New Paltz and St. Mary’s High School on Long Island. He was an assistant in the 2011-2012 season when 15th seed Norfolk State upset second seed Missouri in the first round of the NCAA tournament.

Anthony Evans, a Brooklyn native who played at St. Thomas Aquinas and is now an assistant at Fordham University, was the head coach of Norfolk State in 2011-2012.
