Athletes Waiting for Mayor’s OK

Catholic high school athletes in New York City are waiting for Mayor Bill de Blasio to give his OK for the start of high-risk sports at schools in the city.

The mayor was scheduled to meet with officials from the New York City Department of Health last Friday and said a decision on a start date could come this week. High-risk sports include football, ice hockey, basketball and competitive cheer.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo gave his OK for high-risk sports to begin practice on Feb. 1 with approval from local officials. So CHSAA athletes in Westchester County have started practices, and in some cases began competing in games. Iona Prep opened its hockey season with a 9-3 win over St. Mary’s on Sunday.

The Catholic High School Football League released its 2021 spring schedule with openers set for March 13.
