The New York State Public High School Athletic Association announced Friday all winter state championship tournaments are cancelled for the 2020-2021 season and it has suspended all high-risk sports until it receives the proper authorization to do so from state officials.
The Ursuline School, Our Lady of Lourdes, Albertus Magnus and John S. Burke are Catholic high schools competing in the NYSPHSAA.
“When examining the feasibility of Winter State Championships, it became apparent that travel and overnight accommodations would create a unique challenge for our member schools,” said Dr. Robert Zayas, NYSPHSAA executive director, in a press release. “At this time, we must prioritize maximizing student participation without a focus on championship events.”
Basketball, boys lacrosse, competitive cheerleading, football, ice hockey, volleyball and wrestling are listed as high-risk sports by the New York State Department of Health.
Low- and moderate-risk sports are permitted to continue practicing and competing. State tournaments for spring sports are still on.
