Stepinac, Hayes Meeting Oct. 24

Circle October 24 on your calendars.

If there is high school football in 2020, this is the day Archbishop Stepinac travels to play Cardinal Hayes on the Roof Top Field at Yankee Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Why is this a big game? The game may determine the Catholic High School Football League AAA regular-season championship and the top seed for the playoffs.

In the last six years, Stepinac has won four postseason championships and Cardinal Hayes has captured two titles, including the 2020 championship with a 25-7 victory over the Crusaders.

Stepinac has played in the title game in each of the last six seasons, and Cardinal Hayes competed in four of the last five championship games.

What may keep these programs from competing for another championship is the COVID-19 pandemic. Both schools are waiting to learn if there will be fall sports at their schools after the governor put a hold on summer workouts in the final days of June due to the pandemic.
