Marist College women’s basketball coach Brian Giorgis was presented the Kay Yow Award as the nation’s top Division I coach.
Giorgis received the award from collegeinsider.com after guiding the Red Foxes to a 26-4 record and a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular-season title. The 26 wins marked the ninth time Marist won 25 or more games in Giorgis’ 18 seasons as head coach. Giorgis has a career record of 425-160 at Marist.
Prior to his arrival at Marist, Giorgis coached the Our Lady of Lourdes High School girls basketball program to nine state championships and a 451-44 record in 19 seasons. He’s the only high school coach in state history to coach four different programs — basketball, baseball, softball and volleyball — to the state final four.
Yow won 737 games in 34 seasons as North Carolina State head coach and coached Team USA to a gold medal at the 1988 Olympics. She first was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1987 and died of the disease in 2009.
