Big East Honor for Siegrist

Our Lady of Lourdes High School graduate Maddy Siegrist earned the Big East Women’s Basketball Freshman of the Week award for the fifth time this season.

The Villanova University freshman finished with 18 points, six rebounds, two steals and one assist in a conference-opening win over Providence.

Siegrist was leading the Big East Conference with her 21.6 points per game and was third in rebounding at 8.1 per game through Dec. 29. She was fifth in field goal percentage at 51.1 percent and fifth with 1.5 blocks per game. She was shooting 73 percent from the free throw line, good for 12th in the Big East.

Villanova has matinees scheduled for Dec. 31 against Creighton, Jan. 3 against Seton Hall and Jan. 5 versus St. John’s. The 2 p.m. game with St. John’s is being televised by the CBS Sports Network.

Stepinac Hosting Crusader Classic

The Archbishop Stepinac High School boys basketball team will be playing rival Iona Prep in its annual Crusader Classic at the Westchester County Center in White Plains on Jan. 3.

Tipoff is at 8 p.m.

Stepinac features two of New York State’s top players in RJ Davis and Adrian Griffin Jr. Davis, a senior, and Griffin, a junior, have committed to play collegiately at North Carolina and Duke, respectively. Griffin also is a member of Team USA 16U.

In the opener at 6 p.m., Cardinal Hayes meets PSAL defending champ South Shore of Brooklyn.

 

Timm Signs with LIU

Our Lady of Lourdes High School senior Jake Timm signed a National Letter of Intent to play football at Long Island University.

Timm earned All-Section One honors and was named Section One League C Offensive Lineman of the Year in 2019.

“This is a big day that fulfills a long-time dream of mine. I am here today because of the efforts of many, and I really want to thank God, the entire OLL coaching staff, faculty and my teammates as I would not be moving onto this next level without their help and support,” said Timm, who plans to study criminal justice, in a press release.

Anderson Makes Historic Start

Cardinal Hayes High School graduate Christian Anderson made his first collegiate start for Army during the Black Knights’ 31-7 loss to No. 21 Navy in Philadelphia on Saturday.

Anderson, a junior, became the first Army quarterback in 40 years to make his first collegiate start in the Army-Navy game.

Anderson led Army with 56 rushing yards and a touchdown, and completed two of four passes for 18 yards.

Army (5-8) held a 7-0 lead through one quarter before Navy (10-2) answered with 31 consecutive points.

The New York State Sportswriters Association released its all-state cross country teams.

CYO Days at Iona Basketball Games

CYO New York and Iona College athletics are teaming up for Iona College CYO Days in New Rochelle.

CYO New York athletes and their parents will be admitted free into select men’s and women’s basketball games. Tickets are limited and must be ordered in advance at http://www.cyony.org.
