Iona Prep graduate Brian Moran earned his first promotion to the major leagues when he was called up by the Miami Marlins on Tuesday as rosters expanded for the month of September.
The left-handed pitcher is waiting for his first action with the Marlins, which may come tonight in Pittsburgh against his younger brother and Iona Prep graduate Colin.
Brian Moran, 30, was 2-3 with a 3.15 earned run average for New Orleans, the Class AAA affiliate of the Marlins in the Pacific Coast League. In 60 innings, he allowed 21 earned runs on 45 hits and struck out 77.
Colin Moran, a former first-round pick of the Marlins before being dealt to the Astros and Pirates, is hitting .286 with 13 home runs and 77 RBIs. The 26 year old is the third baseman for the Pirates.
The Morans, who both played at the University of North Carolina, are the nephews of former major leaguers Rich and B.J. Surhoff.
