Five Catholic high school football players from the archdiocese were among New York City’s Elite Eleven honored at the sixth annual Scholar-Athlete Award Banquet at The New York Athletic Club in Manhattan by the New York City Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame May 1.
Fordham Prep teammates Matt Valecce (photo) and Joseph Petti, Cardinal Hayes’ Elijah Jones, Shakim Douglas and St. Joseph by the Sea’s John Buscini were recognized for being in the top-11 players in New York City. Scholar-athletes are considered based on 40 percent grade-point average, 40 percent football ability and 20 percent leadership, school and community involvement.
Valecce and Jones will be teammates at Boston College next season. Petti and Douglas both signed National Letters of Intent to play at the U.S. Naval Academy. Buscini will attend the College of Staten Island.
