Caraun Reid and Chris Manhertz, graduates of archdiocese high schools, are among the players battling for jobs with the first full weekend of NFL preseason action set to begin.
Reid, a graduate of Mount St. Michael Academy, is third on the depth chart for defensive tackles in camp with the Los Angeles Chargers. Reid, who played collegiately at Princeton, is entering his fourth NFL season and second full season with the Chargers after being picked up by the Chargers in the 2016 preseason following his release from the Detroit Lions.
Reid, 25, finished 2016 with five tackles and one sack in seven games.
Manhertz, a Cardinal Spellman graduate who never played collegiate football, played collegiate basketball at Canisius College in Buffalo. He is third on the Carolina Panthers depth chart for tight ends behind veterans Greg Olsen and Ed Dickson.
Manhertz caught one pass for 10 yards in four games in 2016 after being claimed off waivers from the New Orleans Saints. The 25 year old started two of three games for the Saints in 2016 before being released.
