Cosgrove Shines in Losing Effort

Msgr. Farrell High School graduate Tom Cosgrove surrendered one run on four hits over six innings for the Tri-City Dust Devils in a 2-0 Northwest League loss to the Hillsboro Hops on Aug. 30.

Cosgrove, who pitched three seasons at Manhattan College before being drafted by the San Diego Padres in June 2017, is 1-4 with a 3.48 earned run average at Tri-City. He has allowed only two runs and struck out 11 over his last 16 innings.

Tri-City is a Class A short-season affiliate of the Padres.

 

Padilla Pitches 3 Strong Innings

Nicholas Padilla, a Cardinal Spellman High School graduate, allowed an earned run on two hits and struck out three over three innings for the Hudson Valley Renegades in a 4-3 10-inning, New York-Penn League victory over Tri-City on Aug. 29.

Padilla is 2-2 with a 2.03 earned run average and 26 strikeouts in 31 innings this season.

The Renegades, the Class A short-season affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays, are 1.5 games behind the Staten Island Yankees in the standings on Aug. 31 with a week remaining to the regular season. Hudson Valley is three games in front of Aberdeen (Orioles) and State College (Cardinals) for the wild-card spot.

 

Cosgrove Excels for Dust Devils

Msgr. Farrell High School graduate Tom Cosgrove has allowed one earned run over 10 innings in his last two starts to see his earned run average drop from 4.97 to 3.82.

Cosgrove, who struck out five in each of his last two starts, pitches for the Tri-City Dust Devils, a Class A short-season affiliate of the San Diego Padres in the Northwest League.

Cosgrove pitched three seasons at Manhattan College before being selected in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft.

NFL: Updates on CHSAA Grads

Caraun Reid, a fourth year defensive tackle out of Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx, finished with a tackle for the Los Angeles Chargers in a 21-19 victory over the Los Angeles Rams. Reid has five tackles and three assists entering Thursday’s final preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Chris Manhertz, a second-year tight end out of Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx, is still in camp with the Carolina Panthers with two catches for nine yards in the preseason entering Thursday’s final preseason game with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Padilla Allows 0 Runs in Relief Outing

Nicholas Padilla, a graduate of Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx, pitched 1 2/3 innings of shutout baseball in his first outing in 17 days for the Hudson Valley Renegades on Aug. 25.

Padilla allowed two hits and struck out one against the Connecticut Tigers, lowering his earned run average to 1.93.

The Renegades are the Class A short-season affiliate of the Tampa Bay Rays in the New York-Penn League.

 

NFL: Updates on CHSAA Grads

Chris Manhertz, a second year NFL tight end out of Cardinal Spellman High School in the Bronx, caught a pass for five yards for the Carolina Panthers in a 34-27 preseason loss to the Tennessee Titans. He has two receptions for nine yards this preseason.

Caraun Reid, a fourth year NFL defensive tackle out of Mount St. Michael Academy in the Bronx, finished with two tackles for the Los Angeles Chargers in a 13-7 preseason loss to the New Orleans Saints. He has four tackles in two preseason games.
