Jose Carrera became one of the newest members of the New York Yankees organization.
The 5-foot, 2-inch infielder, who just completed his senior season at Manhattan College, was signed as a free agent by the Yankees last week and was assigned to the Gulf Coast League Yankees, Rookie League.
“I’m thrilled for Jose to have the opportunity to play at the next level within the Yankees organization,” said Manhattan baseball coach Jim Duffy in a release from the college. “He has been the heart and sole of the Manhattan baseball program over the last four years. Now he has his chance to chase his dream. I’m proud of him and his perseverance. He’s a great example that hard work, faith and believing in yourself can go a long way.”
Carrera, who grew up in Miami, hit .266 with seven doubles, two triples and 11 stolen bases for the Jaspers in 2017.
