Tom Cosgrove, a graduate of Msgr. Farrell High School on Staten Island, became the first player from the archdiocese to be selected in the 2017 Major League Baseball Draft, chosen in the 12th round and 348th overall by the San Diego Padres on Wednesday.
Cosgrove just completed his junior season at Manhattan College where he matched a school record with 105 strikeouts in 2017. The two-time MAAC Pitcher of the Week in 2017 was 5-7 with a 4.38 earned run average in 84.1 innings.
From the Brooklyn Diocese, Msgr. McClancy Memorial High School made headlines by having two of high school seniors selected in the first five rounds — Quentin Holmes (second round, 64th overall by the Indians) and Charlie Neuweiler (fifth round, 150th overall by the Royals).
