The Moore Catholic High School softball team captured the program’s first state title since 2002 with an 8-0 victory over Long Island champ St. Anthony’s in the AA Catholic State Championship game.
Earlier in the day, the Mavericks beat St. Mary’s of the Buffalo region, 4-2, in a state semifinal.
Moore Catholic, which last competed in a state final in 2007, became the first softball program on Staten Island to win a state title since 2010.
The Mavericks finished the season at 22-4, winning the Staten Island, archdiocese and state championships. Moore Catholic was a finalist for the New York City Championship.
