The matchups for the 2017 New York State Federation Tournament of Champions are finalized with the three-day event scheduled to begin on Friday, March 24 at the Glens Falls Civic Center.

Iona Men Fall to Oregon

The 14th-seeded Iona College men’s basketball team suffered a 93-77 loss to third seed Oregon in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Tournament in Sacramento, Calif., on Friday, March 17.

Jordan Washington had 22 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Gaels, who finished the season at 22-12.

Iona will enter the 2017-2018 season as the two-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament champions.

 

Lourdes Falls in State Final

The Our Lady of Lourdes High School boys basketball team suffered a 54-43 loss to Irondequoit of the Rochester region in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Class A championship game in Glens Falls on Sunday, March 19

The Warriors were trailing by only two points heading into the fourth quarter.

James Anozie and Kevin Townes were named to the all-tournament team from Lourdes (20-7). Teammate John Arceri earned the team’s sportsmanship award at the state tournament.

 

Basketball: Manhattan Men Competing in Northern Ireland

The Manhattan College men’s basketball team was selected to compete in the first Basketball Hall of Fame Belfast Classic on Dec. 1 and 2.

The Jaspers will play Holy Cross and LaSalle will meet Towson on the first day with the winners playing for the title and the losers competing for third place on the second day.

The tournament is being presented by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, Sport Changes Life, Rory McIlroy’s Foundation (Rory Foundation) and The SSE Arena in Belfast.

 

Lourdes, Marist Grad Finalist for National College Coaching Honor

Maureen Magarity-Copes is one of four finalists for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s National NCAA Division I Coach of the Year.

Magarity-Copes coached the University of New Hampshire to the America East Conference’s regular-season title and a 26-5 recording entering the Friday, March 17 WNIT opening-round game at home against Harvard. Magarity-Copes, the daughter of Army women’s basketball coach Dave Magarity, was named the America East Coach of the Year by the conference coaches.

Magarity-Copes played at Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie where she helped the Warriors to a state championship. She attended Boston College, a top-25 program from the Big East in those days, before transferring to Marist where she led the Red Foxes to the program’s first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Tournament title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.
